NORMAN SMOTHERS
Professor of Marketing and Entrepreneurship

Norman Smothers, Ph.D., is a Professor of Marketing, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship at California State University Hayward and has lectured and consulted with clients in America, Asia, Japan, Europe, North and South America. At CSUH, he co-founded the E-Commerce Study Group, the Center for New Venture Alliance, and the T2C Executive Program in technology transfer. His industry experience includes Fortune 100 firms, venture capital, and high tech startups. For example, in the 1990s Dr. Smothers co-founded an Internet & software systems integration company, which achieved over US$1,000,000 in revenues in its first year. For the last ten years Dr. Smothers has managed a consulting firm offering University and Business School Faculty as consultants. In the 1980s, Dr. Smothers co-founded a Silicon Valley venture capital partnership.

Dr. Smothers' consulting clients have included Apple Computer, Radius, Dataquest, Japan Energy Corp., Nippon Steel Corp., AT&T, GTE Sprint, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, and several high technology ventures. He helps his clients achieve their business targets, through market development, IT strategies, and external alliances and finance. For example, in a recent three year consulting project with Japan's 5th largest petrochemical firm he assisted top management in strategy development for internet-based software and systems-using e-commerce to create competitive advantage.

Dr. Smothers holds Bachelor and Master's degrees in Electrical/Computer Engineering from Kansas University, as well as both a an MBA and Ph.D. in Business from UC Berkeley. His focus today is on business strategy and its systematic implementation, especially as related to Internet and e-commerce deployment.
